Anxiety is a threat response, the nervous system's way of scanning for danger and preparing the body to respond. For most people who struggle with it, that system is working too hard, too often, for threats that are not as present or immediate as the body believes.

The standard tools, such as reframing your thoughts or positive self-talk, can be helpful. For many people, they are not enough. They work at the level of managing the response, not reaching the system generating it.

At Houston Healing Collective, we understand that anxiety presenting in a high-functioning individual looks different from anxiety that stops someone from leaving the house. It isn't less real. And it isn't less worth addressing.

How ACT, DBT, EMDR, and Ketamine Work Together for Anxiety

Sessions here are collaborative and layered. We don't just teach you to manage anxiety in the moment, we work with what's underneath it. The approach is built around your specific presentation, not a standardized anxiety protocol.

  • ACT and DBT

    Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy work at the level of relationship with anxious experience, not trying to eliminate the anxiety, but building the capacity to move through it without letting it determine what you do. ACT focuses on values-based action even when anxiety is loud. DBT builds specific skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance. These are often the starting point, particularly for clients who need practical tools alongside deeper work.

  • EMDR

    Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) works by processing the experiences and patterns driving anxiety beneath the surface. Particularly effective when anxiety has a traumatic origin that cognitive approaches haven't reached. Intensives are available for concentrated work or those who can't commit to weekly sessions.

  • DNMS and IFS-Informed Therapy

    Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS) and IFS-informed therapy are parts-based approaches for anxiety rooted in early relational patterns, where the threat system calibrated in childhood to an environment where vigilance was adaptive. Both approaches work with the parts of self that learned to be afraid, offering what the original environment couldn't. Particularly useful for clients whose anxiety has a quality of being younger than they are, or whose worry carries an emotional intensity that doesn't match the current circumstances.

  • Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

    For anxiety that has become entrenched, where the nervous system's patterns have solidified despite genuine therapeutic effort, ketamine can create a window of neuroplasticity that allows the therapeutic work to reach further. This approach is not appropriate for everyone. It is available at HHC where the clinical picture genuinely calls for it, embedded in an ongoing therapeutic relationship.

  • What's the difference between normal worry and anxiety worth treating?

    Worry is a normal part of functioning,  it helps people prepare, problem-solve, and stay attentive to real challenges. Anxiety worth treating is worry that has become disproportionate to the actual threat, persistent in ways that don't respond to reassurance or resolution, and costly,  affecting sleep, relationships, concentration, or the ability to be present. If the internal experience of managing your life feels significantly harder than it looks from the outside, that gap is worth exploring with a clinician.

  • I've tried therapy for anxiety before and it helped somewhat but didn't go all the way. What's different here?

    Most anxiety treatment focuses on cognitive tools and coping strategies, and those approaches have real value. What we add is clinical attention to what's underneath: the nervous system patterns, early relational experiences, and sometimes trauma that is driving the anxiety at a level that cognitive work alone tends not to reach. If you've done meaningful work and something hasn't shifted, that's often because the work hasn't yet reached where the anxiety actually originates.

  • I function fine. Is my anxiety actually serious enough to treat?

    Yes. High-functioning anxiety, anxiety that doesn't visibly impair daily life but costs significant internal resources to manage, is still worth treating. The standard isn't whether you're still meeting your obligations. The standard is whether the internal experience of doing so feels proportionate to what the situation actually requires. If managing is exhausting, that exhaustion is clinically relevant.

  • Is everything I say confidential?

    Yes. All therapy sessions at HHC are confidential. As licensed clinicians, we are bound by both ethical codes and state law to protect your privacy. There are narrow legal exceptions, mandatory reporting requirements for certain safety situations, but these are specific and clearly defined. Nothing you share is disclosed without your consent outside of those circumstances.

  • How long does anxiety therapy typically take?

    It depends on the presentation, the history, and what the clinical picture involves. Some clients experience meaningful shifts in weeks, particularly with targeted approaches like EMDR for a specific triggering experience. For anxiety rooted in early relational patterns or complex trauma, the work tends to be longer, and more durable.
